There are many ways for postgraduate students at Southampton to fund their studies and living costs. Financial support is available from the government, the University and external organisations.

Funding from research councils

If you're a UK/EU student, you might be able to get funding towards your tuition fees or living costs from a UK research council.

PhD-specific funding

Students studying for a PhD can apply for funding from a variety of sources. The University offers many different funding opportunities and external organisations often provide funding to certain student groups.

Doctoral Training Centres

Doctoral Training Centres offer fully-funded four-year studentships. They feature a taught first year and three years of PhD research.

Presidential Scholarships

Postgraduate Research Scholarships, or 'Presidential Scholarships', cover your fees, a stipend and a support grant for up to 3.5 years.

Engineering Doctorate

Our four-year engineering doctorate (EngD) is conducted in collaboration with an industry sponsor. It combines advanced technical and management training with PhD-level research.
